Overview

The Department of Surgery is a multi-faceted organization in a complex organizational structure. It is a department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for patient care, medical education and research. The Chair of the department is also the Chief of Surgical services for the hospital and, as such, has a broad range of activities including administration of the OR; allocation of scarce OR resources; adequacy of surgical beds; and credentialing of hospital surgical staff.The department includes full-time faculty members in the sections of: general & bariatric surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, transplant surgery, and trauma & acute care surgery. The department faculty provide surgical care to the people of eastern North Carolina, including pre-operative and post-operative care.
